Is the oak from an old dining room table when cut to size suitable for outdoor fencing? New oak boards are so expensive I thought I might cut and plane the oak from two old tables to use as fencing boards. The question is "Will they stand up to the weather without twisting?".
How do you remove ALOT of glass from an 8 foot deep in-ground pool? Our glass outdoor dining table was thrown into our swimming pool during a wind storm. Now all of the shattered glass is in the 8 foot deep section of the in-ground pool. How do we remove all of the glass? We are afraid to run it through the pump - it will cause damage. Also we can't have all the glass drain into the street with the water. We are also afraid that if we drain all the water from the pool, that it will pop out of the ground! Please Help!
What is the clear coating on restaurant dining tables? Say I have a wooden dining table that I love but I hate having to use table pads and a table cloth just to have an informal meal because I don't want spills and condensation to ruin the finish on my table. What I would like to know is: What is that clear, high-gloss, waterproof, scratch proof coating I see on restaurant tables and sometimes on stair railings or outdoor railings and other outdoor wood fixtures and furniture? Is is a special polyurethane or some kind of lacquer? If anyone knows what it is, do you know if it can be easily applied by a novice to any wood fixture or furniture? Thanks in advance.

My cats were outdoor/indoor but for the last year they have been indoor only? They have been indoor only because we live in an area with a lot of coyotes and hawks and mountain lions. However, I am moving back to where we used to live and I was wondering would they still be okay going outside there or have they lost their outdoor instincts from being inside for so long? They do not really like being indoors all the time. They scratch my furniture and fight with each other. I have bought many scratching posts but they really just like my dining room table legs. Can they be outdoor pets again?
What is the best affordable wood for outdoor furniture? We need a new dining table and chairs for the garden. We can't afford teak but there appears to be a wide selection of products in either acacia wood or eucalyptus wood. Which of these two woods is the best choice and why? Of course if anyone knows a place to buy low cost teak furniture then please let us know. Thanks
How can I move house with my outdoor cats? We have two cats that are about a year old. They are not allowed inside our house and simply spend their day in our garden and around the neighborhood. We are going to move in a few days, and we really don't know how to move them. A friend of us lent us a cage, but it's only the the size of a dining table and my cats really dont seem happy in it. If we took them one by one, and kept them in a cage outside for two or so weeks, would they run away as soon as we let them out? Thanks Alexia
How dog friendly are the eateries in Huntington or Newport (CA)...for outdoor dining? During our summer vacation - If we ate somewhere near the pier (either one), how many establishments are ok w/ a quiet dog laying near the table while our family eats at their outdoor seating? It always seemed to be such a dog friendly atmosphere but now I'm reading "dog beach only" or only from "5pm - 8am". We have a well behaved dog we want to bring w/ us on vacation - we're just trying to figure out if he's coing to have to sit in his crate while we play - or can he come along. Javier - dog friendly people would eat at a dog friendly establishment. A well trained dog does not go potty when they want, but when they're allowed to. I would NEVER allow my dog to eliminate where people are eating. Furthermore, I can't think of anything more cruel than a FAMILY vacay at the beach & leaving our dog in a kennel!
How does one find a good, compatible and multi-faceted interior designer? We may be acquiring a large house in Morgan Hill, CA, and will need to buy some furniture, pool shade, pool and outdoor furniture, window treatments, dining table, kitchen table, lounge suites and desks/office furniture. How can one find a nice interior designer who can handle all that and is experienced? I'm trying to make sure we end up with some sort of objective 3rd party opinion during what will be a difficult time of making alot of choices. I'd like them to be co-ordinated choices.
What are some easy and cheap Halloween OUTDOOR decorations for a kids party? I'm looking to decorate my back yard for a kids (2 year old) Halloween party. I don't have many trees in the middle of the yard so I can't really hang things. I have a few signs I am going to post, three tables with Halloween tablecloths and pumpkins and gords (sp?) as decorations but don't know what else to do. I don't want anything scary. Would scarecrows be alright or is that not really Halloweeny? Also, do you think I need to decorate everyroom? I decorated the dining room with a Hallween table cloth and a few things hanging from the chandelier and decorated the family room with streamers and a centerpiece. But, I don't really plan on decorating the playroom except maybe a few things hanging from the ceiling. Is it necessary to decorate the kitchen? Thanks!

How long should a home bar be to seat a family of four? We want to build an outdoor bar to replace our patio table. Our family of four would like to sit out there for frequent outdoor dining. My question is, when building a bar how much space is allotted, generally speaking, for each person to sit and eat comfortably? 3 feet per person? 2?
My new business - a McDonalds / Burger King combined restaurant! Where do I buy their huge outdoor signs? Over the years, I’ve heard hundreds (if not thousands) of people state they like Burger King hamburgs but don’t like their fries. They further state their desire for Burger King hamburgers with McDonalds fries. However, your average person is not going to travel to both restaurants and wait for each item as the other gets cold. This is where my ingenious idea comes to play. I will reconstruct my kitchen room & dining room into restaurant fully equipped with tables, stools & chairs. I’m going to hire 2 teenagers that will travel to McDonalds for fries & Burger King for Burgers every half hour. This brings the 2 products to the customer – nicely, quickly & hot!!!! What I need at this point is information where to buy the large McDonald and Burger King signs they have outside their restaurants to put outside my house. Where do I get them?
What types of problems have you had dining outside.? I've had wind blow things off my table. What sorts of problems have you had?.------------------------ (A friend of mine maybe wants to open a restaurant that has outdoor seating)
Would it look trashy to have a Little Tikes picnic table in my dining room? Summer is almost over and I took in the outdoor toys from the patio. My son is 16 months now and could really use a toddler table and chairs for his snacks, and in the future, for crafts. So I put his Plastic picnic table in my dining room. It is a in great condition (I bought it used so is sun faded). We have hardwood, so I put some of those little foam alphabet mats under it. This is a picture of it only mine is yellow and orange: http://halifax.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-toys-games-Kids-Picnic-Table-Little-Tikes-W0QQAdIdZ74863934 Your opinion or thoughts?

Backyard projects/suggestions please? My husband is invoved in several major projects in our home (renovating the kitchen, upgrading heat, finishing the basement)and I don't want to give him another project but now that the weather is getting nicer I would love to make use of our yard. Out the back door is a small say 5x5 piece of cement where the dog poo's. We have brand new outdoor living room set, a highbar and dining table w/6 chairs,BBQ and a firepit we got it all last year at our bridal shower and Im itchin to enjoy these thing in the yard and possible entertain. We are not going to really build a patio or deck until next spring so I need a simple solution to creat a non perminant patio on the grassy area Im thinking about 15 foot square in size and I don't want it to be gross when it rains. Could we put down some type of pavers with out cementing them to the ground and let the grass grow through the cracks. Also Im thinking of it being a small afternoon project as to not send the husband over the edge!!! it needs to be fairly simple and will be removed next spring when we do a deck

how to treat my wooden table on the balcony? i bought a wooden table which used to be dining table and evolved to balcony table when i got a new dining table. it's not made to go outside. the balcony is covered as i'm not the top floor and there's a balcony just over it, but the table definitely gets some rain, especially on the outer side. it was not expensive at all so i don't feel bad about it, but it's getting that gray, weathered look on half of it and i'm thinking it might be nice to paint or stain a reddish tone it to freshen it up and also protect it somewhat. i guess if i used outdoor paint or stain that would work. which would you recommend and do i need to sand or otherwise prepare it, besides washing? thanks! it was an unfinished would table. so i'm not sure if sanding is necessary. i thought it might help to get a more even fresher color and texture if i paint it, as it's a bit greyed. to get rid of some of the gray and "healthy up" the wood. if i stain it, it would be good to have a more regular color. if i paint it, the sanding might be less important.
What color to paint my living room? This what my furniture looks like... I have light tan microfiber couch and love seat with dark brown pillows and a red accent chair. My coffee table, end tables, entertainment center and dining room table (open floor plan) are all dark wood. I have a forest green accent rug under the coffee table and lots of grassy to dark green accents around. Even my wall painting is an outdoor foresty painting. I painted my walls a medium swampy green color (its a really nice color) But now I have far to much green in my house. What color do you suggest? I want my house to look more open and cheerful yet cozy and relaxing. Since I have an open floor plan I plan on painting my oak colored kitchen cabinets white and putting new hardware on them. (mabye)
No smoking but fluffy's ok? When dining alfresco at a cafe the other day, I noticed that although I was not allowed to have a cigarette in the outdoor dining area, a woman next to me had her filthy little mongrel dog on her lap. The mutt was practically sitting at the table! If it's a health & safety issue as to why you can't smoke then surely the dog should not be allowed to be there either? I am just as offended by eating with a dog as she may be over my smoking. Is it just me or does anyone else agree that the world has gone mad? Look don't preach to me about the dangers of smoking. It's my legal right ok! I CAN'T & DON'T smoke at the cafe. The issue is about the dog being a health issue also.
NBC: Did anyone watch The Marriage Ref? If so, what did you think about it? And isn't Jerry Seinfeld supposed to be the host? Who was the guy that was introducing the couples on the videos? Honestly, I didn't expect much out of this but was willing to check it out since it's new and I was very surprised. I thought this show was hilarious! It had a good amount of humor about real issues in a relationship no matter how big or stupid it may seem to people. I love how the guest celebs on the show, offer their thoughts and their own experiences. I'm not a fan of Eva Longoria but she was crackin' me up tonight! She was pretty honest about her similarities to the nagging wife who had made a huge deal about her dining table and then the issue about the do-it-yourself kit for the outdoor patio. I hope this show does well. I really enjoyed it! I posted this question in the Soap section because one, I thought the show was hilarious! And second, don't us die hard soap fans, wish there were arenas like this were we could just tear into and analyze the crazy people who say and do stupid things on our soaps? Just a thought...
Mother-in-Law's controlling ways worse now that we have a child!! She's driving me crazy!! Any advice? My mother-in-law has always pursed her lips at me or made snide under-handed comments about how a wife should be, which is ironic, considering she's divorced and has made quite the mess of most of her romantic relationships in life. She has, since we were married 8 years ago, always tried to "educate" me on how to do things "properly." I would just smile and nod and be irritated, but I could live with it; after all, we live 4 1/2 hours away. Thank God! Now that we have our daughter, her first grandchild, she has stepped it up and she's driving me crazy in the worst way. Her personality to begin with is "look at me"/center-of-attention-at-all-times to begin with. She's always telling us how some 25-year-old hit on her and how she gets so many offers for dates. She's engaged to a lovely man who she promised to marry 4 years ago, after his son graduated from high school. Her fiance's son graduated this past year and she told him, since he doesn't have much work coming into his business, and she wouldn't be able to retire (she's 48), she won't marry him until she can. In the meantime, she's e-mailing other men and talking to them on the phone. Who does that? Ok, so back to the issue...She spares no time in reliving her days as a parent and how she did things, and telling me how she thinks my DD should be raised. I am constantly badgered with questions like, "When are you going to wean? Haven't you nursed her long enough?," (My daughter is 12 months), and, "I never let my boys sleep in bed with me," and "you really should have her on 2% milk," even though my daughter is on the slight side and needs a little extra fat AND our pediatrician has recommended whole milk for her for that reason. This is all irritating, of course, because both her boys (my husband included) are quite spoiled and have problems not getting their own way (surprise) but the real kicker is her controlling the holidays and all family events this year. She wasn't there to see my daughter when she was born because of a medical condition...understandable. But she refused to come for her 1st birthday party, which hurt my husband's feelings. She was too busy with work and going to festivals with her boyfriend that week. So when we didn't move the party (and dining table) into the living room so she could interact with the party via webcam, she threw the world's biggest tantrum, trying to punish my husband by not talking to him, and acting like a spoiled child. We've always known this about my M-I-L...it's kind of a family joke ("oh, that's just her"...is the phrase). So, to make peace we went up for an unplanned visit for Thanksgiving. She was mad that I didn't want my dogs in the house because they are outdoor dogs and my daughter is scared of them. She let her 75lb. dog charge my daughter and bowl her over and when I pushed the dog away and expressed my frustration to the dog, got very testy with me and defended the dog ("He's just a baby!"...He's 8 years old). She would not put up any baby gates, even though the stairs to her basement had no door and the entrance was in her living room where she insisted my DD also play, because it would "smudge the walls." I had to watch her like a hawk all 4 days. Her advice was also a constant flow...not needed, or appreciated. Now for Christmas, her other son and D-I-L (who of course can do no wrong) chose to come after Christmas from out of town on the day we are leaving. I am working the following day at 6am and his mother wants us to stay the whole day to spend time with her son with whom my husband is estranged, and who has treated our family with distain and rudeness for as long as I can remember. I wanted to travel Saturday night, because it's easier with a baby to travel at night when she can sleep and so that I could have enough time for some rest and prepare for work AND my husband needed to get home for an unexpected work project. Also that Sunday will be a huge travel day and we always have construction quite a bit of the way there and back. Traveling with my one-year-old in the day has proven to be VERY difficult. My M-I-L doesn't care about any of these reasons we've given her. My mother-in-law threw the biggest hissy fit. She was SO mad. She brought it up again and again how unfair to her other son it is. How selfish I was being. She wouldn't listen to my DH that he also needed to leave for work and it just wasn't me. She guilted him until he felt bad...so now he says he feels guilty about not honoring his mother and her wishes and I am being selfish for not wanting to stay to please her. I feel like this is going to be an awful Christmas. How do I not resent her and feel bitterness towards her during the holidays when she insists on always getting her way. Oh and last complaint, I promise: She told me she would wrap my gifts to my daughter herself since she can do it so well. When I said, "I'd like to wrap them for her, but thank you," she huffed, pur

Your mother doesn't remove the Marlboro from her lips before telling the State Trooper to kiss her *ss. The primary color of your car is "bondo". The most commonly heard phrase at your family reunion is "What the hell are you looking at, Sh*thead?" You think that beef jerky and Moon Pies are two of the major food groups. You think that Campho-Phenique is a miracle drug. You've ever used a weed eater indoors. You have a rag for a gas cap (on a car that does run). You look upon a family reunion as a chance to meet `Ms. Right'. You have to go outside to get something out of the 'fridge. Your richest relative invites you over to his new home to help him remove the wheels. You've ever financed a tattoo. You go to your family reunion to meet women. Your idea of a 7 course meal is a bucket of KFC and a six-pack. You go to a Tupperware party for a haircut. You have spray painted your girlfriend's name on an overpass.
i have an ethical question regarding friendship and pets. Need honest help.? I am between jobs and don't have a permanent living arrangement. Also, I am a truck driver. A friend of mine has agreed to let me stay at her house for however long I need. Even let me park my truck in her back yard. And I am extremely grateful for her helping me like this, so however I can, I try to help her out. When I can afford to, I give her money to help with the bills and groceries, also do chores around the house. My problem is that she and her family have a lot of animals. Some of them are farm creatures (chickens, ducks, goats, hogs, pot bellied pigs, and a miniature horse). The rest are cats and dogs. The main problem I have is that her family takes such poor general care of these cats and dogs. I feel compelled to report them to the Humane Society or ASPCA or local Animal Welfare Agency. But at the same time, I can't risk/afford to get thrown out of the house until after I have found a new job and managed to get my truck running again and off of her property. The main issues are that she has a dog that is kept in the barn, sharing a pen with the two hogs. He never leaves that pen. They don't even go out to pet or play with him except for feeding time. He has ben in the barn for at least 8 years now. That is no way to treat a dog. The other dog that they kept in the barn finally died earlier this month. She was a mini poodle with both hind legs crippled. She was alone in a pen in the barn for 9 years. There are 5 indoor cats, who never go outside, as well as 7 or 8 outdoor cats that never come in. None of them are spayed or neutered. None of them have had any shots. Every summer, they end up with a gaggle of kittens, over half of which end up dead because of lack of proper care and massive in-breeding. Last summer there were 4 litters of kittens born. Out of that, there are only 4 kittens that managed to survive. And two of those have survived only because they were brought into the house to keep as indoor cats, because they were so cute. To all of that, add two nasty little male dogs that are kept inside the house. One is a dachshund, the other a poodle. Neither are neutered, which results in them peeing on anything and everything that will stay still long enough for them to lift their leg. It doesn't matter how many times you let them out to go potty, they come inside and pee on the table legs, the ends of the couch, the cat's scratching post, etc. I was told that they weren't neutered because the original plan was to breed them. They are now 8 years old, and they have no intention of breeding them. Also, with the cats, my friend and her family seem to almost refuse to clean the two litter boxes they have. And when the boxes get full and the cats resort to peeing in other places, they suddenly get mad. There was a sixth cat inside, and she is pregnant. She was recently put outside because she was caught peeing on the newspapers and plastic bags that they left on the dining room table. And yet, it is perfectly fine for the dogs to pee, or even poop, inside the house. The outdoor cats are lucky if anyone remembers to feed them on a regular basis, and for the most part are forced to find shelter in the barn or huddle together on the patio. As I said before, I can't risk being tossed out until I have someplace else to go, which I would love to find. So how do I tactfully tell them their treatment of their animals is substandard and in some cases illegal, without burning a bridge? I try to do what I can to make up for the care that they refuse to provide, but I can only do so much without being found out and told to stop. I don't have the money or transportation to provide the real care that these animals need. i have been thinking that I will wait until I and my truck are out of here, then call in an anonymous tip to the authorities. But I am sure it wouldn't take long for them to realize it was me who reported them. So what is the best course of action in this situation?
tenant's rights - common backyard area? I live in an apartment building in San Francisco that has a shared common backyard area. Recently the landlady has requested that all tenants remove their stored items (barbeques, bikes, ping-pong table) from the area, citing that it is to be used for shared outdoor enjoyment, not storage, which is fine. Here's the problem: now one of the tenants (a cafe owner below us) is planning on making the outdoor area seated dining at dinner times for his patrons. Is this right? It seems completely bogus to me...the landlady makes all of us get rid of our stuff, but allows one tenant to use the area to turn a profit while the rest of the tenants suffer the inconveniences? Having this outdoor area used as public dining gives complete strangers direct access to our backdoors and kitchen/bedroom/bathroom windows. I'll have to weave in and out of diners to take out my trash on any given evening. What's the best action to take with the landlady? Does she have the right to make this area a rented space? If so, can each tenant request the rent be deducted from their monthly dues? I would much rather be able to just keep the backyard as a private area, as I use it just about every weekend. Please help! I'm fuming!
SURVEY: what does your house look like? i just moved to my parent's new house, and i love it here :) exterior: spanish-style villa, rosebuses growing around the main entrance, backyard cabana & pool, guesthouse, garage behind the guesthouse. basement: indoor pool, sauna, jacuzzi, snooker table, lounge, wet bar, and maid's room/washing machine + dryer. 1st floor: foyer, living room, kitchen, family room, bathroom, dad's office, outdoor patio, formal dining room, and breakfast bar. 2nd floor: me & my sister's rooms, a library, a TV room, and two bathrooms 3rd floor: parent's master suite. what does your house look like?
Guest Minimums and Room Sizes? I touched upon this in my last post. But, I found a really great reception site. It's absolutely stunning, right on the water w/ the ability to have use of the indoor dining room and the outdoor beach front for our whole reception. It is also an amazing price, almost a steal for the amount and quality of food were are getting. I'm in love with this place. However, there is no catch. This reception site has 2 seperate and nicely spaced apart dining rooms. The first one is for 150 people or under. That room is very small and tight. The views are ok, but I would deal with that. I peeked into this room while a wedding was going on. It was so tight. Everyone was on top of one another. Literally, one guest would pull out their chair to get up and hit the chair of the person eating at the table next to him. Not good. The second room is 150+ and has amazing views. The room and dance floor are huge. It is also set back farther from the entarance and parking lot. It's just amazing. However, my guest count is only 150, without RSVPs. I will be placed in the smaller room. Is there anyway I can make a deal with the reception site. I would be willing to pay a little extra, to have this room. Has anyone had a similar situation? What did you do and what was the outcome?
does this sound like a good idea for a house? Here are my ideas for my dream house. I can see it in my mind but can't find anything online like I imagine it! Entryway: Circle Drive, house up on a slight incline with brick stairway coming up in a semi-spiral Enter: you see a grand foyer with a chandelier. There are two staircases in semi-spirals that meet at the second floor and connects as a landing. To your right on the first floor is an office, and to the left is a formal dining room. Upstairs (right above you since it is a two story ceiling) you have two bedrooms and a connecting bathroom for kids on one side, of the landing, and on the other side is a playroom. Downstairs past the entry in the back of the house: Large kitchen with a breakfast bar and island and breakfast nook which flows into the family room. Awesome home theatre system of course! Then to the far right will be the master bedroom with a little lounge area, king bed with awesome linen, and a bathroom with his and her sinks and toilets, a whirlpool, and a big shower with nozzels EVERYWHERE! In the basement: Wetbar, air hockey table, pool table, dart board, entertainment center, poker table, pillow room (chill room with pillows everywhere) and the basement is walkout to a deck with an outdoor kitchen, inground pool and hot tub, awesome landscaping, including waterfalls in the pool. Also, the deck is dual level and the top level comes around the back of the house so you can go down from the family room or master bedroom. That's basically it. What do you think?
What is wrong with my neighbours!? They are so loud and they moved in about five months ago. So one night, I went outside and I heard a girl crying in their backyard and she was swearing saying 'You're going to fuc*ing regret this (more swearing)' I went to the fence and asked if everything was alright, no answer. So I stayed there and heard her quietly walk off. I heard more yelling inside, then a MASSIVE scream of 'MUM, MUM, HE'S GOING TO HURT ME MUM, MUM, MUM ARGHHHHHH!!!!' I looked through their dining room window at her mother (I guess this was her mother) and she did nothing but sat at the table. Sometimes I hear screams from their house and once I was watching TV and I heard screaming, so I turned on the outside light and looked through the back door window. I saw nothing, then I went into the family room and my brother was looking through the venetian blinds and he said 'Crap, someone's looking through the window' (their windows face our backyard) I looked through the blind and saw the vertical blind moving, so someone had just looked through, then they shut the external shutters. My older brother sleeps out in a bungalow (an outdoor house), in the yard near their house and he says they always scream. Just today, I heard a dog, maybe a puppy, yelping from their house, as if in pain or it was trapped. I could have looked over fence but it is too high and their windows face my yard, I jumped up on my trampoline and tried to look over but I couldn't because of trees. Then I heard the dog yelping again, really loudly and it was rattling against something. To be honest, it sounded like it was in a cage and I've never head a dog from this house yelping before. What should I do, should I just stay out of it, or should I do something and what??
How do you remove ALOT of glass from an 8 foot deep in-ground pool? Our glass outdoor dining table was thrown into our swimming pool during a wind storm. Now all of the shattered glass is in the 8 foot deep section of the in-ground pool. How do we remove all of the glass? We are afraid to run it through the pump - it will cause damage. Also we can't have all the glass drain into the street with the water. We are also afraid that if we drain all the water from the pool, that it will pop out of the ground! Please Help! It is a concrete pool, no plastic liner. We live in a small rural area and the professional pool people we contacted, were also stumped and did not want to attempt to help us.
